Renton’s late run wasn’t enough as the Indians fell to Shadle Park 72-62 in the first round of the 3A state tournament.

Renton (14-13) struggled with the Highlanders’ size and couldn’t find a rhythm on offense early. Shadle Park built a 26-12 lead after the first quarter and 39-23 lead at the half.

The Highlanders shot 59 percent in the first half, while Renton managed just 29. The Indians pulled down 10 first-half rebounds to Shadle Park’s 25.

Things turned for the worse when the Highlanders started the second half with a 20-4 run and built a 32-point lead (the game’s biggest). Renton managed to close it to 26 at the end of the third.

The Indians started to turn things around in the fourth quarter as they applied constant pressure, forcing Shadle Park mistakes. Renton also started driving towards the hoop hoping to draw contact.

The Indians started the quarter with a 20-5 run and eventually got as close as six point (66-60), but there wasn’t quite enough time.

Achoki Moikobu spearheaded the late Renton effort, scoring 15 of his game-high 22 points in the final period. He fouled out late in the game.

D.J. Eubanks scored 10 for Renton. Laudon Thomas grabbed nine rebounds to go with his six points and three steals.

Renton will face Mount Rainier Thursday at 2 p.m. in a loser-out game. The Rams and Indians have faced off three times this season, with Mount Rainier winning all three by an average of almost seven points.
