A lot has gone on in Renton sports over the past week, but my favorite recent story has to be the Renton softball team. This group hadn’t won a game since 2003 and now they’ve won three out of the past four!

It had been so long since a win the current group of seniors, and two groups before them, had never seen a win.

The girls seemed incredibly happy a couple days after the first win when I spoke with them. In today’s climate where high school sports can get much too serious, it’s good to see girls having a lot of fun out there.

After Andrey Levkiv tossed the discus 174′ 6″ last week at the Arcadia Invitational in California, he now leads Washington in both shot put and discus distance.

Area schools have a lockdown on the discus right now. After Levkiv, Lindbergh’s Zack Nielsen has the third-best distance, Renton’s Armin Basic has the fourth (Basic also has the fifth-best shot put distance) and Lindbergh’ Jacob Allie has the eighth. That’s four local throwers in the top ten in the state.

The weather finally allowed for some games to be played. But as you can see from first base at Renton High, there are still some muddy remnants from the spring’s rain.

Now it’s a race for teams to complete make-up games. Renton baseball coach Mike Johnson said this morning that his team has 12 games to play in the final 15 days of the regular season. I’m sure a lot of spring coaches have similar issues right now.

Hazen’s Andrey Levkiv tossed the shot put 60′ 6.5″ in his first event of the season and the distance still stands at Washington’s best.

Levkiv placed second at the state meet last year in shot put. To give you some scale to the distance, it would have won state by around two feet last season (and eight feet in 2007).

He’s second in Washington in discus.

Go here for a look at Washington’s leaders.

I use this web site all of the time, it’s great. From the link, you can go to each event to see the state leaders, to each athlete to see their history, or to each school to see the results and schedule from this season.

I showed up to the Liberty/Mount Si softball game early last week to talk to Liberty’s new coach for a season preview. While I was figuring out good angles to shoot the game, I saw Jay Buhner warming up with the Mount Si team. His daughter plays for the Wildcats.

Its always exciting to see a guy you grew up watching. From the quirky batting stance to the 40-homerun seasons, Buhner always looked like he was having a great time playing the game.

Just to introduce everyone, this is the first-ever posting on the Renton Sports Blog. I’m Adam McFadden, the sports writer for the Renton Reporter.

This will be a place where I’ll write about things I see on the field or in box scores, and interesting bits that don’t quite fit into a story.

Stay tuned…
