Renton topped Lindbergh with a wild, 43-40 win Friday night.
The Indians (1-2 overall, 1-0 Seamount) got four touchdowns from senior Anthony Gold. The Eagles (1-2, 0-1) got six touchdowns from Cam Callen, but it wasn’t quite enough.
Lindbergh opened the scoring with a 21-yard strike from Matt Stuart to Callen. Gold responded later in the first with a 99-yard interception return for a touchdown. Stuart and Callen then connected again, this time from 49 yards out. Then Renton’s P.J. Mattingly blocked a kick and returned it for a touchdown. Stuart and Callen connected yet another time in the first quarter, from 26 yards away. At the end of an action-packed first quarter, Lindbergh led 18-14.
Callen scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter, but then it was all Renton before the half. Gold ran for a 73-yard score and returned another interception for a touchdown (this time from 50 yards). Mattingly also caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Da’Ssuan Sauls. Uriel Gonzalez then made a 30-yard field goal. Renton led 36-26 at the half.
Lindbergh closed the gap to 36-33 when Stuart threw another touchdown to Callen, this one from 10 yards out. Gold then returned another interception for a touchdown (from 30 yards). Callen threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Holt later in the quarter.
Gold now has eight touchdowns for the Indians through three games. Callen also has eight for the Eagles.
Renton faces Highline Thursday night at Highline. Lindbergh takes on Hazen Friday night.
Hazen shut out by Kennedy Catholic
Hazen ran into a tough defense and lost 28-0 to Kennedy Catholic Friday night.
The Highlanders (2-1, 0-1) were averaging 26 points per game coming into the contest. Hazen rushed for 107 yards on 38 attempts, and completed two passes for 33 yards.
A two-yard run by Kennedy’s Colin Cossette was the only scoring in the first half, as the Lancers led 6-0.
Kennedy then broke through and scored three times in the third quarter.
Kyle Nelson had 10.5 tackles on defense, while Cody Moorhead picked up a sack and a tackle for loss.
Liberty rebounds with big win against Sammamish
Liberty bounced back from two tough, non-league losses to beat Sammamish 54-7 Friday night.
The Patriots (1-2, 1-0 KingCo 3A/2A) started the season against KingCo 4A contenders Skyline and Issaquah, and found the going considerably easier against Sammamish.
Liberty went up 21-0 in the first quarter on two touchdown runs from Hamilton Noel and one by Casey Smith. Jordan West completed a nine-yard touchdown pass to Connor Hudson in the second quarter. Liberty added a safety and a field goal to lead 40-0 at the half.
West completed another touchdown pass to Tynan Gilmore in the second half, while Noel and Tei Staladi each scored rushing touchdowns.
Liberty plays Mount Si Friday at Mount Si.
