Patriots undefeated in league play, KingCo champs | Soccer

Unbeaten, unscathed or victorious. Call the Liberty girls soccer team what you want to call it, undefeated will suit coach Malia Arrant just fine.

“We don’t get any second chances with having an undefeated season,” Arrant said. “And we have this goal of being undefeated and going all the way to the state finals that way.”

Liberty finished its regular season with a tie against Interlake Thursday night, giving the team an undefeated league record.

Another way to describe the team? KingCo champions. The Patriots (11-2-3 overall, 11-0-3 KingCo 3A/2A) locked up a league title with a 3-2, double overtime win against Juanita Oct. 21.

That double-overtime game epitomizes much of Liberty’s season. Seven of the team’s wins have come by just one goal, many of them in overtime. It will be hard to rattle the Patriots in the postseason.

“Just watching these girls when we get scored on, they find one more notch to compete on,” Arrant said. “It’s amazing.”

Meanwhile, all of this has happened in Arrant’s first season as the Liberty coach. Arrant, who coached previously at Eastside Catholic, said the success is more due to inheriting a talented team than anything specific thing she’s done.

“I walked into a great group of girls with a lot of talent and cohesiveness. I came in and organized a few things and gave them some direction in a couple of places,” she said. “Me being a new coach kind of mixed things up for them. They have to reprove themselves.”

Cassidy Nangle leads Liberty with nine goals. The junior has been starting for the Patriots since she was a freshman. She made the KingCo 3A all-league first team each of the past two seasons.

Kimi Fry has six goals and four assists for the team. Whitney Cain has four goals.

Arrant called sophomore midfielder Nicole Marlow a huge surprise.

“She’s just been awesome, and she wins everything in the air,” Arrant said.

On the backline, senior Baylee Cooke and sophomore Leah Grefthen have been keys. Liberty has allowed nine goals in 13 league games.

Macaire Ament and Jennifer Rucker have combined for seven shutouts in goal.

The Patriots two non-league losses before the start of league competition came to Skyline and Issaquah by a combined score of 4-1. The Spartans are 15-0 and KingCo 4A champions, while the Eagles are 11-3-1 and finished third in the KingCo 4A, so Liberty should be ready to face the elite competition at state. The Patriots advance directly to state by virtue of their league placing.

The first round of the 3A state soccer tournament is Nov. 9-10.
