After a second-place finish in the Seamount League last season, the Lindbergh wrestling team is returning four participants in last year’s state tournament and are getting ready to make another run at the league title.

Top returners for first-year coach Mike Pine’s squad include seniors Abby Chufar at 124 pounds, Colton Maddy at 126 pounds, Trevonn Russell at 195 pounds and James Garcia at 285 pounds, all four of whom were state participants last year. Russsell finished in eighth place last year.

Along with those four, Pine said there are many other wrestlers to watch on this year’s squad.

According to the coach Chad Omonaka at 113 pounds has “put in the work in the off season and should surprise some people.” The coach said the same about Jayden Schwope, whom he also expects to have a “successful season.”

The coach also expects strong season from Westerling Nugent at 138 pounds, Deven Maddy at 132 pounds, Diego Gallegos at 170 pounds, Joey Hernendez at 182 pounds and Olivia Jollimore at 170 pounds.

Lindbergh began their season at the Nov. 30 “Takedown Jamboree” and open their regular schedule Thursday against Evergreen and Tyee at Evergreen.

The first-ever Lindbergh Invitational is set for Dec. 21. According to the coach, the winner of each weight class will receive a specially-designed championship belt.
