It’s all about gelling for the Lindbergh tennis team.

“They’re really coming together and getting focused on improving,” said Lindbergh coach Steve Bergquist. “That’ll have an impact on their ability to get through leagues and into districts.”

The team took a trip to Houston during Spring Break to watch the U.S. Men’s Claycourt Championship and play tennis. Bergquist said the trip drastically improved the team’s chemistry.

Bergquist leads the team on a trip every two years. This time the Eagles worked on drills and camps (because the team’s schedule was already full), as well as seeing tennis pros in person

“Seeing the action up close is completely different than watching on TV,” Bergquist said. “It got them motivated to start working out more.”

Despite being a senior-heavy team, the Eagles are led by sophomore Adrian Villanueva on the boys side. He has played in the boys No. 1 singles spot eight times this season and is 5-3.

“He’s really made the strides to become No. 1 this year,” Bergquist said.

Lindbergh’s top boys doubles team is made up of seniors Ulysses Lane and T.J. Bayna. The two are 4-1 when playing together this season. Bergquist said they had a good match going against Kennedy April 16 that had to end early because of rain.

Seniors Erin Johnson and Amber Hiranaka are Lindbergh’s top doubles girls team. The two have been playing together on varsity for three years.

Bergquist said the two had an excellent chance to get to districts last season, but Hiranaka came down with the swine flu and couldn’t play in the league tournament.

This season, he hopes Villanueva, Bayna, Lane, Johnson and Hiranaka all make districts.

Lindbergh plays at Tyee April 26.
