A year after sending nine competitors to state, the Lindbergh girls swim team is looking to get even better.
“We’ve got good depth this year,” said Lindbergh coach Roger Miron. “We don’t have that state-caliber hot shot, but we’re looking pretty good in the second-, third- and fourth-place spots.”
The Eagles have 25 swimmers for the second straight year, with eight of them being new. Lindbergh’s biggest losses are Savannah Lemke and Karlie Pfluger, both made state last year. The Eagles finished 22nd at the 2A state meet.
Miron said he expects his team to win all of its Seamount meets other than against Hazen and Kennedy Catholic. The Eagles are also facing Archbishop Murphy, Ellensburg, Enumclaw and Tahoma in non-league meets.
Junior Jacqui Flaherty, senior Lauren Miller, junior Kaitlin Zinsli and senior Brenna Healy all return after swimming in multiple events at state.
Flaherty competed in the 200 medley relay and the 100 back. Miller swam in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. Zinsli and Healy each swam in the 200 and 400 free relays.
Miron said the downside of having such a young team last year is that most of the teams at state were young, too, meaning the Eagles won’t have quite as much of an advantage from the experience as they might in other seasons.
Senior Amanda Miller finished seventh in the dive competition at state, while junior Bailey Faull (400 free relay) and sophomore Erica Garl (400 free relay) each competed at state as well.
This will be the team’s second year at 2A, after dropping from 3A, which changed the postseason qualifying times.
For now, the swimmers’ first goal is to make district qualifying times. Then it’s to make state qualifying times. From that point, Miron said the team will just see what happens.
