Lindbergh advances to state with come-from-behind win against Olympic | Soccer

Things just didn’t bounce Lindbergh’s way. The girls soccer team entered the half of its district playoff game against Olympic on Saturday trailing 2-0, with the season rapidly winding to a close.

But that wasn’t good enough for them. The Eagles bounced back to tie the game in regulation, held on through two overtimes and eventually won 5-4 in a shootout.

Lindbergh (11-4-1) got a number of excellent saves from goalkeeper Audrey Cunningham in the first half, but was still behind 2-0.

“We went back to the basics,” said Lindbergh coach Kirk Tavener. “I told them this is your last 40 minutes of the season, you don’t want to leave it this way.”

The Eagles came out much more aggressive in the second half and got a goal five minutes in when Jami Kouba kicked a cross from the right corner that Kayse Angel knocked into the goal.

Whitney Hilde then made a penalty kick in the 75th minute to tie the game 2-2.

The two five-minute overtimes passed without any scoring, though both teams did threaten. Olympic had one stretch near the end of the first overtime with a free kick and corner kick within seconds of each other, but couldn’t capitalize.

“That took a couple of years off my life,” Tavener said.

Cunningham blocked the first Olympic penalty kick in the shootout, putting Lindbergh in good shape. Hilde, Jordyn McLuen, Kimi Girmus, Elise Aylward and Kouba all made their kicks to give the Eagles a win.

“They started bonding more,” Tavener said. “They really came together and it was exciting to watch.”

The Eagles will play Sumner in the first round of the 2A state tournament Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Sunset Stadium.
