The Lindbergh Eagles boys swim team are the 2016 Seamount League Champions.
The Eagles swan away from this weekend’s league meet with six first-place finishes, including a new league record in one-meter diving by Derek Anderson.
James Buchanan also won two individual events for the Eagles and was part of two winning relays, while Benjamin Pogue won an individual event and was part of the winning Lindbergh relay teams.
Hazen’s Sergio Licea-Montes and Derek Wei also each won an individual event and were part of Hazen’s winning 200-yard freestyle realy.
Lindbergh finished the day with 361 points total with Hazen finishing second at 317 and Kennedy third with 297. Renton finished a distant fourth with 47 points.
Anderson, a junior at LHS, scored a total of 484.10 points on his way to a new league record in diving. Hazen Sophomores Azton Norman and Brian Nguyen finished third and fourth, respectively.
And while Anderson may have had the best day above the water, it was Lindbergh’s Buchanan who had the best day in it. Along with being part of the Eagles’ winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams, Buchanan outswam all competitors in the 100-yard freestyle to win it in 48.91 seconds. Pogue finished fourth for the Eagles.
Hazen’s Logan Dickman and Alexander Fortescue finished fifth and sixth in the race.
Buchanan also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.14 beating the second-place swimmer by more than five seconds. Hazen’s Trevor Ofsthus finished fourth while Lindbergh’s Myles Malphrus finished sixth.
Lindbergh’s Benjamin Pogue won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.32 seconds, followed by Fortescue of Hazen in second at 24.03, hazen’s Victor Hayes in fourth and Lindbergh’s Andrew Pogue in fifth.
Hazen dominated the 100-yard butterfly this weekend, with Licea-Montes barely touching out teammate Wei 53.61-53.76 for the title, while fellow Highlanders Quinn Dickenson and Kien Ngyuen finished third and fourth. Lindbergh’s Ian Pogue and Fernando Garcia finished fifth and sixth.
Wei also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time or 1:02.22, while teammates Cameron Sokoloski and Dickman finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Lindbergh’s Anderson took third place in the breaststroke.
Licea-Montes also finished second in the 200-yard freestyle, followed by Lindbergh;s Dupree Nugent in third and Malphrus in fifth.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Hazen’s Kien Ngyuen finished second, folowed by Lindbergh’s Anthony Vogeler in third, Cris Midrigan in fifth and Minh Pham in sixth.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Lindbergh’s Vogeler finished second, while Nugent finished fourth and Hazen’s Dickenson came in sixth.
District championships begin Friday at Hazen High School.
