Liberty loses to Lakeside in second round at districts, still alive for state | Girls basketball

The Liberty girls basketball team lost a defensive battle to Lakeside 42-27 in the district playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

The Patriots (16-9) will move to the consolation side of the bracket and play the loser of the Juanita/Holy Names game Friday at Bellevue College at 8:30 p.m. Liberty must win that game and one more to make it to the 3A state tournament.

Liberty led 7-6 before Lakeside went on an 8-0 run through the end of the first quarter and early second quarter to go up 14-7. The Patriots responded with a 10-0 run to take a 17-14 lead at the half.

The Lions turned the game around in the third quarter. Lakeside scored 18 points in the period and slowed down Liberty with a full-court press. Liberty trailed 32-23 after three quarters.

Lakeside led by as many as 15 in the fourth quarter and held the Patriots to four points in the final period.

Danni Sjolander led Liberty with 13 points. Aspen Winegar scored seven points.
