Late interception return by Chandler Jenkins puts Liberty ahead of Mount Si | Football

When the Liberty football team need a play, it turned to the one consistent source it’s had all season: Chandler Jenkins.

Jenkins returned an interception 30 yards for a score in the finals minutes of the Patriots’ 20-17 win against Mount Si in the first round of the 3A state football tournament.

Liberty (8-3) will face Bellevue in the quarterfinals. The Patriots lost to the Wolverines 23-20 Oct. 29.

Mount Si struck first, scoring on a 73-yard run from Shelby Williams early in the first quarter. Liberty answered with a 22-yard touchdown run from Jenkins and a 23-yard touchdown pass from Trey Wheeler to Jake Bainton to take a 14-7 that it held until the half.

The Wildcats outscored Liberty 10-0 in the third to build a 17-14 lead.

Liberty got in position to tie the game late, but missed a field goal. On the ensuing Mount Si possession, Jenkins made his interception return to put Liberty on top.

Jenkins rushed 20 times for 178 yards and a touchdown. Wheeler passed for 97 yards, 68 of which went to Bainton.

Jenkins now has 1,718 rushing yards and 29 total touchdowns on the season.
