Hazen soccer starts postseason with 5-0 win | BOYS SOCCER

Senior Marcelo Castro had a hat trick and an assist in the win and captain Sam Bunnell was named the Seamount League's Outstanding Athlete.

After seven days of no games, Hazen Coach Ken Matthews had a slight worry his team may have come out a little rusty, but the Highlanders postseason run got underway early and they never looked back on their way to a 5-0 opening round win over Auburn Mountainview.

“We like a fast start and that’s what I hoped for. But we haven’t had game conditions in a while,” said Matthews in a press release.

But that didn’t matter for the Seamount League champs as Hazen jumped out with two goals in the first seven minutes and scored late to end the night with a convincing win over SPSL’s No. 2 Wednesday at Renton Memorial Stadium.

Junior midfielder Luis Puga scored off a cross from senior forward Marcelo Castro at the six minute mark. Castro then got one of his own on an assist by senior season captain Sam Bunnell a half a minute later.

But Casrto wasn’t done, as he picked up a hat trick to go along with his game winning assist. He scored at 63 minutes assisted by senior mid Casey Guay and at 70 minutes assisted by senior defender Angad Singh.

Bunnell also picked up a goal on a free kick at the 75 minute mark.

The win gives Hazen their second title to go along with their Seamount League championship. They also are the top seed headed into Saturday’s Bi-District Championship game, scheduled for 4 p.m. at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

“The Shelton High School website says they are the No. 4 Seed from the Narrows League and that’s who we play. We’ll show anyway,” Matthews said.  “After the way we played tonight, I can’t wait to get back out there at watch our guys again.”

On Wednesday, the Seamount League also announced the 2013 All League Team and Hazen placed seven players on the squads.

In addition, Bunnell was named the League’s Outstanding Athlete.
