Hazen soccer advances win win over Capital

Zach Quesnel and Reyes Garcia led the way for Hazen, with each getting a goal and an assist.

The Hazen Highlanders soccer team kept their season alive Thursday with a 2-1 victory in a win-or-go-home match against Capital.

Zach Quesnel and Reyes Garcia led the way for Hazen, with each getting a goal and an assist.

The win means the Highlanders will move on to face Shelton Saturday at Highline Memorial Stadium with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

Capital got on the board first, scoring in the 26th minute and the game stayed 1-0 through the half.

But the Higlanders came out fired up and scored both of their goals within eight minutes of the start of the second half, Quesnal getting his in the 50th minute and Garcia getting the game-winner in the 58th.

After that, according to Coach Ken Matthews, Capital threw everything it had at the Hazen defense, but the backfield and senior keeper Jaime “Chino” Martinez held the line.

Hazen now will play its third game of the week tomorrow, Saturday, against Shelton.

“We’re tired, beat up and cramping on the bus rides home,” Matthews said in an email. “But whatever happens from now on out – I am extremely pleased these guys have pulled it together and put themselves one win away from a ticket to the dance.”
