The Seamount league champion Hazen boys soccer team survived a scare from upstart Tyee Tuesday night, but walked away with a draw to remain unbeaten this year in league play.

Senior captain and forward Sam Bunnell scored both goals for the Highlanders on assists from senior Angad Singh and forward Marcelo Castro.

Hazen finished the year 11-0-3 in the Seamount League and 11-1-4 overall, with the only loss coming on the first game of the year.

Coach Ken Matthews joked in an email that the school should change the team’s name to reflect the team’s season.

“With regrets to Gordy (Hazen’s Mascot), I’m going to petition the school board to change it the Hazen ‘Invincibles,'” Matthews said.

Matthews said the name is a reference to the 2003-2004 Arsenal team from the English Premier league, which earned a similar nickname after going undefeated, only the second time that had ever happened.

Matthews said after the Highlanders lost their opening match to Interlake, Matthews pulled out and wore an old Arsenal shirt for luck and has worn it every game since.

The Highlanders are idle until May 8 when they will host a playoff game against the second seed from the South Puget Sound League at 7 p.m. at Renton Stadium.
