Hazen falls to Garfield in double overtime

The teams traded shots for more than 80 minutes in a physical back-and-forth game that saw both sides get chances and both goalies make key saves.

The Hazen soccer season came to an end Tuesday in heartbreaking fashion as Garfield scored a “golden goal” about 12 seconds into the second overtime period to notch a 1-0 victory and knock the Highlanders out of the state tournament.

The teams traded shots for more than 80 minutes in a physical back-and-forth game that saw both sides get chances and both goalies make key saves.

As the second overtime period began with the teams still knotted nil-nil, the Garfield Bulldogs pushed into the Hazen end and blooped a shot over the outstretched hands of Hazen keeper Luis Rodriguez for the winning score.

“This game exemplified The Dance in every way. Both teams gave it everything,” Hazen coach Ken Matthews said in an email, referring to the state tournament. “I wish I could think of a moment where we let down and explain why we lost. There isn’t one. The guys worked their tails off and I’m proud of them and what they did this year.”

Hazen earned their birth in the state tournament after beating Columbia City 1-0 on Saturday to give them the No. 3 seed headed into states.

Hazen finishes the year 12-6-1 overall and 11-3-0 in the Seamount League. Next year, the Highlanders will move up to 4A to play in the new North Puget Sound League.
