Hazen builds big lead, then loses it, still wins; Liberty wins first of season; Renton loses to Garfield | Boys basketball

Hazen 57, Sammamish 56

Hazen built a 21-point lead, then lost it and finally beat Sammamish 57-56 Monday.

The Highlanders (5-2 overall, 3-2 Seamount) built a big lead through the first half, but Sammamish went on a 19-4 run in the third quarter to climb back in the game.

R.J. Magar led Hazen with 16 points on just seven shots. Magar went 4 for 5 on three-point shots. Decourious Sampson scored 11. Sampson collected seven assists and three steals. Brandt Graybeal led the team with nine rebounds and five blocks. He also scored eight points.

Garfield 64, Renton 38

Renton fell to Garfield 64-38 Tuesday in a non-league game.

The Indians (3-4, 3-1) fell behind 14-2 after the first quarter and couldn’t climb back into the game. Garfield outscored Renton 27-26 in the middle two quarters, then widened the lead by 13 in the fourth quarter.

Justin Bennett led Renton with nine points. Achoki Moikobu and Hanley Shum each scored eight.

The Indians start league play again Jan. 5 at Hazen.


Liberty 76, Cedarcrest 58

Liberty withstood a big first quarter from Cedarcrest on the way to a 76-58 win Monday.

It was the first win of the season for the Patriots (1-5, 0-3 KingCo 3A/2A). Liberty trailed by 10 after the first quarter, then got back to within three at the half. Liberty then outscored the Red Wolves by 21 in the second half.

Farzam Shokri led Liberty with 17 points. Kyle Marlow scored 14 and Chandler Jenkins scored 13.
