Hazen beats Renton at Les Schwab Tipoff Classic | Boys basketball

Hazen topped Renton 68-58 at Kentwood Saturday in the Les Schwab Tipoff Classic.

While both teams play in the Seamount, this was a non-league game. The Highlanders (1-1) bounced back from a 55-54 loss to Kentwood Dec. 2. Renton (0-2) lost 48-47 to Skyline in the first round of the tournament.

Hazen took a seven-point lead after the first quarter, but Renton came back and went into the half trailing by just four. The Highlanders put on more pressure and built a 10-point lead heading into the final quarter.

R.J. Magar led Hazen with 20 points. He made four of eight three-point shots and tallied four steals as well. De’corious Sampson scored 14 for Hazen and picked up five assists. Dawait Kasa added 13 points.

Darren Briggs and D.J. Eubanks each scored 18 points to lead Renton. Mitch Edwards added 10 points.

Renton opens league play at Highline Dec. 7. Hazen plays at Lindbergh Dec. 8.
