Hazen beats Mountain View 3-2 to advance to next round | BOYS SOCCER

Junior midfielder Luis Puga had two goals, including the game winner with seven minutes left.

Hazen got a late goal with seven minutes left in the game to take the lead and then hung on for a 3-2 win over Vancouver’s Mountain View High School Wednesday to keep their season alive and advance to the second round of the state tournament.

Junior midfielder Luis Puga scored the winning goal for the Seamount champion Highlanders, his second of the match.

Hazen got on the board first at four minutes into the game when senior forward Marcelo Castro scored off a through pass from senior mid Casey Guay.

“I’m thinking, this is good,” said Hazen Coach Ken Matthews in an email.  In their previous two playoff games, Hazen scored early and late to advance.

But Mountain View had other plans.Three minutes later, Mountain View’s Fabian Celestin scored from Rylan Berriman to tie the game up.

But the Highlanders answered when Puga picked up his first goal of the game off a timed a run to the back post and an assist by senior mid Devin Sando.

But the Rolling Thunder tied the game up at 2-2 in the second half on a Marshall Hartley penalty kick seven minutes into half.

The score held until Puga’s second goal came off an assist by senior defender Angad Singh near the end of the game

“The whole game we couldn’t get our passing going with the consistency we wanted. Luis’s second goal was just hard work – he chased a ball down in the corner, beat a man, and scored from a bad angle,” said Matthews. “The guys worked hard on a night where we didn’t have our best. That makes the win a little sweeter.”

Men of the Match were Senior Defender Eddie Tim, Castro and Puga.

Hazen plays Shorecrest at 1 p.m. Saturday at Renton Memorial Stadium. The winner advances to the state semi-final game on May 24 at Saprks Stadium in Tacoma.
