Hazen beats Linbergh, looks to lock up top seed this week | BOYS SOCCER

Hazen will have a chance to wrap up the top seed Friday against Kennedy Catholic, during the team's Senior Night at Renton Memorial Stadium.

The Hazen Highlanders boys soccer team continued to roll through the Seamount league this week, racking up big shutout wins over Foster and Lindbergh as they make their way toward the postseason.

The Highlanders on Friday bested Foster 7-0 and then beat Lindbergh 9-0 on Tuesday, complete with hat tricks each from captain Sam Bunnell and senior forward Ezequiel Ochoa.

Things started slow against Foster, with the Highlanders scoring just once in the first half, and that coming in the final minute. But in a five-minute period to begin the second half, Hazen ran off four goals and never looked back, adding two more later in the game.

On Tuesday, the Highlanders took on the Lindbergh Eagles and notched another shutout. Along with Bunnell and Ochoa’s three goals apiece, forward Marcelo Castro, junior Isiah Blount and Freshman Reyes Garcia also each found the back of the net for the Highlanders.

Hazen has secured a playoff spot already this year, but according to coach Ken Matthews, the team wants to wrap up the No. 1 seed, which would ensure the Highlanders a trip to the second round, whether they win their first game or not. The second-seeded team plays a loser-put game.

“We’ve been to the playoffs the last three years.  Most of these guys have been there so it isn’t an ‘awe’ factor anymore,” Matthews said in an email.  “But not having that pressure in the first playoff game would be good.”

Hazen will have a chance to wrap up the top seed Friday against Kennedy Catholic, during the team’s Senior Night at Renton Memorial Stadium. The Lancers presently sit in second place, just four points behind the Highlanders on the Seamount League table.

The teams played to a 1-1 draw earlier this season.

Hazen finishes up their regular season Tuesday at Tyee.

“We’ve played 12 league games and 14 overall. And now it comes down to a two game season,” Matthews said.
