Hazen came out on top of Highline in a closely-fought, 4-2 battle Monday.
The Highlanders (14-5 overall, 12-4 Seamount) got strong pitching from sophomore Jimmy Schmidt and Nick Sharp. Schmidt started and went 3.2 innings. He struck out three and allowed one run. Sharp earned the win in relief with 3.1 innings of two-hit pitching.
The Pirates took an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Hazen responded with a run in the second and then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. The Highlanders added two more in the fifth and held Highline to one run in the seventh.
Jeffrey Beckman went 2-2 with a double and an RBI single. Sharp went 1-3 with an RBI single at the plate.
The Highlanders are currently the Seamount’s No. 3 seed and would play the SPSL’s No. 3 team Friday at 7 p.m. at Russell Road Park in Kent, unless Kennedy beats Highline tonight. In that case Hazen will play a tiebreaker with Highline for the No. 2 seed.
The No. 2 seed plays the SPSL’s No. 2 team Saturday at 4 p.m. at Auburn Mountainview.
