Feature: Hazen’s Airashay Rogers

After watching Hazen freshman Airashay Rogers on the basketball court, it’s clear she has something special.

“She goes one speed,” said Hazen coach Jeff Bernhardt. “She just has an amazing energy level. She’s powerful, yet graceful.”

Bernhardt had reservations about starting the 5-foot-7 freshman at point guard, both because of her youth and the fact that it is Rogers’ first season in his program.

“She’s one of the most charismatic freshmen I’ve ever been around,” Bernhardt said. “Most freshmen are timid, but not this one.”

As a talented scorer, Rogers must balance the responsibilities of a point guard and her tendency to attack the hoop.

Rogers leads Hazen in scoring, at 18.8 points per game. She’s third in the Seamount in the category behind Lindbergh’s Marcissa McMillan (21.0) and Tyee’s Arinesha Smith (19.1).

“My main goal isn’t always to score. It’s to get the ball around,” Rogers said. “But if I have an open lane and I know I can get past the person, then I’ll try to score.”

The left-hander said her favorite player is WNBA star Candace Parker and her dream is to attend the University of Connecticut (UConn) after graduation to play basketball.

Hazen finished the regular season at 13-6 overall and in third place in the Seamount. The Highlanders play Enumclaw Friday night in an Seamount/SPSL playoff game to decide seeding to the West Central District III tournament.
