An early look at some of Renton’s top returning track and field athletes, Part I

This is the first part in a series of articles about Renton’s top returning track talent in the Seamount. First is boys runners and hurdlers. Up next is boys field events.

Boys sprinters

Duncan Mackay Hazen

The junior tied for the Seamount’s fastest 100 meter time in the regular season, at 11.27 seconds. He improved that best to a time of 11.18 at districts.

Mackay has the league’s fastest returning 200 meter time, 22.54 seconds. He ran that in the finals at the Seamount League meet.

Frank Cange Lindbergh

Cange, a junior, tied with Mackay for the 100 meter during the regular season at 11.27 seconds. However, he blew away the rest of the league with the 11.05 he ran in the prelims at districts. He finished fourth in the finals at districts. He placed tenth in the prelims at state.

Cange ran a 22.67 time in the 200 meter in the regular season, second fastest returning time in the Seamount.

Cange also has the league’s top returning 400 time (50.82).

Also watch:

  • Renton sophomore Antonio Stephens didn’t run at many events last year but he placed 13th at districts in the 100 meter (11.35). He was the fastest freshman at districts in that event. Stephens placed 15th in the 200 meter (25.52) at districts.
  • Hazen junior Michael McGillivrary placed fifth in the finals of the 400 meter race at the Seamount League meet.

Boys distance

Matt Miland Lindbergh

Miland, a senior, will be one of the league’s top two or three distance runners (Along with teammate Trevor Thompson and Mount Rainier’s Michael Miller). He ran a 4:20 in the 1600 at districts, which got him a third place finish. He placed 10th in that race at state.

He also placed third in the 3200 at districts, with a time of 9:33. He finished seventh at state in that race, at 9:25.

Trevor Thompson Lindbergh

The junior nearly mirrored Miland’s production last season. He ran a top 1600 time of 4:26 at the Seamount League meet and picked up a sixth-place district finish and a 13th-place finish at state in the event.

Thompson’s best 3200 time was 9:27, at the Shoreline Invitational. He placed sixth at districts and 10th at state in that event.

Also watch:

  • Lindbergh senior Joseph Patti placed fourth at the league meet and 11th at districts in the 3200 meter race. He finished seventh in the 1600 at the league meet.
  • Hazen junior Kyle Gibbs placed 13th in the 1600 and 11th in the 3200 at the league meet.

Boys Hurdlers

James Holland Hazen

The junior placed fourth at districts and 13th at state in the 110-meter hurdles. His best time was 15.57 (at the state meet), which is the Seamount’s top returning time.

He also placed sixth at the league meet in the 300-meter hurdles. His best time last year in that race was 41.55.

Tevin Ponders Renton

The senior placed ninth at districts in the 110-meter hurdles (15.92 seconds). He placed 16th at districts in the 300-meter hurdles (40.95).

Ponders finished third at the Seamount League meet in both events.

Adriel Johnson Hazen

Johnson, a senior, won the 300-meter hurdles event at the Seamount League meet. He ran a season-best 40.16. He placed 14th at districts.

He placed fourth at the league meet in the 110-meter hurdles and 10th at districts in the event.
