Peter Geoffrey Newing

Peter was born August 28, 1924 in Walton-on-Thames, UK and passed away December 6, 2015 after a brief illness.

During World War II he served in the Royal Naval Patrol Services on minesweepers in the Far East and the North Sea. He married Hazel Gerrard on August 14, 1948. In 1959 he was transferred to the United States and moved to Renton in 1962.

Peter thrived on volunteering in his community and was an active member of the Renton Lions up until his death. In 1965 Peter began officiating in track and field and was instrumental in the formation of the Pacific Northwest Track and Field Officials Association. He was appointed as a lifetime board member of the association and continued to donate his time to the sport at a regional level officiating at the state high school championships and University of Washington track meets.

Peter is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hazel. Children, Geoffrey (Linda), Deborah (Frank) and Andrew (Jamie). Grandsons Matthew (Brittany), Scott and Christopher. Sister Rosemary Stevenson – Wendover, UK.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Renton Lions Club Youth Camp; P.O. Box 554; Renton, WA 98057-0554 and the Renton Historical Society; 235 Mill Avenue South; Renton, WA 98057.

Services will be held at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church, 4228 Factoria Blvd., Bellevue, WA, Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 2 p.m. A reception at the church will immediately follow.
