James Francis Mellon

James Francis Mellon’s “flight” ended on October 23, 2015. Jim was born in Carnegie, Pa. in 1922. Growing up in a neighborhood comprised of Irish, Italian, German and Polish immigrants, he was aware early on, of the bigger world beyond his hometown. At the outbreak of WWII, he enlisted in the Air Force, and flew 35 missions over Hungary and Germany. He completed 47 more missions in the Korean War. Following that conflict, he found his calling was to remain in the Air Force, for the simple fact that flying planes of every kind was the best job he could imagine.

After retiring from the military, he completed his BA degree, and worked in a variety of occupations, always with enthusiasm for what he was doing.

He was married to Pauline (they met skiing in Colorado) with whom he shared 66 years, and 3 much-loved children. Always interested in other countries and their peoples, Jim and Pauline found numerous opportunities to travel the world together.

Jim’s hobbies and interests were many and varied. He especially enjoyed outdoor activities; in particular, walking (a Volkswalk every weekend), skiing, and biking. Family camping and travel in a succession of RV’s was a particular pleasure.

Volunteering was also important to Jim. He spent many years working with the Lions Clubs and their Sight and Hearing programs. The Museum of Flight was another favorite. He would spend weekends leading tours, adding his considerable experience to the exhibits.

He is survived by Pauline; children James Anthony (Kande), Richard Joseph (Sheila), and Christine Elizabeth (Emilio); grandchildren Gina, James Anthony Jr. (Kayla), and Heather (Benjamin); 3 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Phyllis Murphy.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Renton Lions Club or The Trust for Public Land.
