HELEN IRENE LEWIS

Helen Irene Lewis, nee McGreer, was born January 3, 1923 in Condon, OR. She passed away April 14, 2017 in Renton, WA at age 94.

She was raised on a ranch in central Oregon where running water was a hand pump on the back porch and lighting was provided by kerosene lamps. She walked or rode a horse to a one-room schoolhouse in Clarno, OR until 8th grade. She boarded with an aunt to attend high school, graduating from West Seattle High School class of 1940.

In 1941 she married Carl Lewis, an engineer with the Idaho Power Company. They had three children, Diana, Laura, and Brian. In 1957 Carl got a job with Boeing so they moved from Idaho to Seattle. Helen herself started a 30-year career with Boeing in 1958.

When she retired she did some traveling and took up genealogy as a hobby. The genealogy group she belonged to assisted the Washington State Archives in Bellevue to index their old records onto computers and Internet accessible databases. For the last 26 years, Helen usually was at the archives twice a week. She worked there the last week of her life.

Her children and grandchildren, Danny and Bjorn, survive her. She had a good productive long life and was loved by all who knew her.
