Speed cameras coming back on with start of Renton schools Wednesday

Renton students will start school Wednesday and so will school zone speed cameras.

“As the school season is quickly approaching, we want to remind all drivers to slow down,” said Commander Kent Curry, Renton Police Department.

Renton has speed cameras outside Renton High School, McKnight Middle School and Talbot Hill Elementary.

All three locations have warning signs, and when the cameras are on so are the flashing yellow lights.

Since installing the cameras in 2008, speeding violations have dropped by about 35 percent, according to a City of Renton press release.

High-speed violations for people driving 16 to 20 mph faster than the speed limit have dropped by 42 percent.

“The steady decline in school zone speeding violations indicates that our school zone safety program is succeeding,” Curry said.

The speeding ticket is $124 for 5 mph or more over the limit and $250 for high-speed violations. The ticket does not go on people’s driving records.

When the cameras are turned on varies depending on when the schools have students coming and going campus.
