The Sikh community in South King County will celebrate May 1 with its Sikh Day Parade and a gathering for all at Springbrook Elementary School.

This is the third year the Sikhs have held the parade, starting at their Gurudwara Singh Sabha of Washington temple on Talbot Road South.

At Springbrook, everyone can enjoy booths, food, vendors and a children’s area.

The parade starts at about 11 a.m. at the temple at 5200 Talbot Road S. and should arrive at the school at about 1:30 p.m. The route is south on Talbot, left on South 200th Street, right on 103rd Place Southeast, right on Southeast 204th Street and right on 100th Avenue Southeast to the school.

The parade will leave the school at 3:30 p.m. for its return to the temple at about 5 p.m.

The Renton Police Department is handling traffic control and will have rolling closures for traffic as the parade moves along its route.

The temple is also coordinating the day with the City of Kent and King County.

The parade is a Sikh tradition and is held in numerous cities, said Dimple Thiara, a member of the temple’s governing board.

Typically, the parade falls on April 13, but the temple in Renton holds its parade in May so as to not conflict with other parades, including a large one in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The parade will include marchers and floats, some with themes, including three created by the Renton temple. Other temples from nearby cities also will enter floats.
