Snow in Renton’s forecast Saturday, but first there’s wind, rain; passes to get hit

There's a chance of snow in Renton on Saturday, but first a rainy breezy storm is going to blow through town.

There’s a chance of snow in Renton on Saturday, but first a rainy breezy storm is going to blow through town.

The warm front is expected to hit  Wednesday morning, with rain in the lowlands and a combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain in the Cascade passes, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a winter storm watch for the mountains.

Crystal Mountain, Washington’s largest ski resort, plans to open Friday, Nov. 18, based on the mountain snow forecast this week. Right now there’s about a foot of snow in Green Valley. As of Tuesday, the ski areas on Snoqualmie Pass have not yet received enough snow to open.

In Renton the rain will start after 10 a.m. Wednesday and continue into the night. Winds will gust to about 34 mph out of the southwest. The high will be near 48 degrees and the low around 39 degrees

Showers and gusty winds will remain on Thursday, but the temperatures will start to cool. The low Thursday is forecast for 33 degrees. Friday, the high will be about 43 degrees.

Friday night, the snow level will be about 1,100 feet, lowering to 600 feet, with a low of around 32 degrees.

It’s Saturday that snow is mostly likely, when the snow level drops to around 300 feet. The high is forecast for 42, with a low of around 31. Sunday will see slightly warmer temperatures.

In the mountains, snow level will drop to about 2,000 on Wednesday morning, but rise to about 5,000 feet when the warm front arrives, according to the weather service. About six inches of new snow is expected in the passes late Wednesday night and Thursday.

A cold east wind will create a mix of snow, sleet or freezing rain in the passes, creating hazardous driving conditions. Such conditions have already affected Snoqualmie Pass this week. Chinook and Cayuse passes are closed for the winter.
