With too few votes left to make a difference, Ed Prince has won election to the Renton City Council.

TUESDAY UPDATE: Ed Prince added to his lead over Robin Jones Tuesday. Prince has 7,678 votes or 51.91 percent to Jones’ 7,058 or 47.71 percent. Prince holds a 620-vote lead.

With too few votes left to make a difference, Ed Prince has won election to the Renton City Council.

The count released Monday showed Prince with 7,104 votes, or 51.70 percent, to 6,585 or 47.93 percent for his opponent, Robin Jones, a difference of 519 votes.

After the initial count on election night, Nov. 8, Prince led by 128 votes.

Prince said Monday night his victory is humbling but he’s “over-the-moon happy.”

“It was a hard-fought race,” he said. He’s looking forward to serving his community.

Prince’s slim advantage grew daily as new votes were added to the tally, a trend that assured him victory.

The King County Elections Division had received about 19,000 ballots from Renton voters as of Monday night, including 1,067 on Monday alone. That’s roughly 45 percent of the city’s 42,624 registered voters. About 5,000 of those ballots remained to be counted, based on the tally in the Prince/Jones race,  and more continue to trickle in.

City Council incumbents Don Persson and Greg Taylor have easily won re-election in their contested races. Council member Marcie Palmer ran unopposed, as did Mayor Denis Law for a second term.

The Prince/Jones race drew the most votes in the city elections, roughly 14,000 as of Monday, with the Persson/Forister race not too far behind. Prince’s team figured that Jones would need to win about 60 percent of the remaining votes to overtake him. So far, Jones has received about 48 percent of the vote.

Prince and Jones are running for the council position held by King Parker, who is retiring from the City Council.
