Renton police still investigating alleged rape at Lindbergh High School

Renton police are still investigating an alleged rape in late January at Lindbergh High School. "The case is being actively investigated by the Police Department, i.e., evidence has been sent to the crime lab and once the results come back, we will have more information with which to proceed," wrote police spokeswoman Terri Vickers in an email this week.

Renton police are still investigating an alleged rape in late January at Lindbergh High School.

“The case is being actively investigated by the Police Department, i.e., evidence has been sent to the crime lab and once the results come back, we will have more information with which to proceed,” wrote police spokeswoman Terri Vickers in an email this week.

A female student told her father about an assault at the school on Jan. 25. They reported it to the police on Jan. 31. The police informed the school of the allegation and began an investigation. Lindbergh staff and the Renton School District also investigated.

A male student was placed on short-term expulsion, while the investigation was conducted over the course of two weeks.

The male suspect has been allowed back to school, but as of Monday, Feb. 28, he has not returned.

Randy Matheson, Renton School District spokesperson, sent an email to several community members who had expressed concern. In it he wrote, “Even though Renton Police, the district and Lindbergh High have conducted thorough investigations into the allegations, there is no evidence that a sexual assault took place on or near Lindbergh High School.”

“There is no video, no witnesses, and, in interviews of both the boy and girl — conducted by Renton investigators and school administrators — there is no testimony that has led to evidence that supports the claim,” he wrote.

In a phone interview he clarified that while he acknowledges the investigation is still ongoing, “to date they haven’t given us any information that the assault took place.”

Matheson said the school and the district will continue to work with the parents of both teenagers and “the school is absolutely safe for students.”
