Highlands and Sierra Heights elementary school staff are working with their families in the evenings during 10-week adult English as a Second Language (ESL) classes to help parents be better prepared to play a more active role in their child’s education.

Teachers Norma Cuevas, Mickey Dunn and Vince Davis provide families with help to learn the same words and language that is being taught in elementary school classrooms so families are better prepared to help communicate and work with students at home.

The Renton Parent University program, which is funded by an Immigrant Children and Youth grant awarded through the state’s education office, also helps parents learn more about their school and navigating the school system.

The families will hold a celebration-graduation in late March.
