The Return to Renton Car Show is planning to take over downtown to celebrate its 20th anniversary July 11.
“We’re shutting down roads like crazy,” said organizer Ryan Runge.
The benefit cruise-in expects to attract about 400 cars, trucks and motorcycles, provided there’s good weather.
The benefit will close most of South Third Street as well as several one-way intersecting streets near the Renton Piazza.
By being downtown, show organizers hope to draw people to local businesses. The group decided to only offer a few snack-style food vendors to encourage the about 3,000 visitors to eat at downtown restaurants.
“I think now more than ever the city needs to have things that bring people down to the community and become involved,” he said.
After heavy budget cuts this year, the cruise-in is the only fundraiser keeping the Renton Police Youth Fund afloat, Runge said. “It’s pretty much their only income that comes in the whole year.”
The event is centered at the Renton Piazza, where visitors can find a small art show, raffle prizes, kids activities and sponsor booths.
Since it began, the show has raised about $130,000 for the Renton police youth programs.
The show begins at 10 a.m.; awards are presented at 3 p.m.
Car registration begins at 8 a.m. Participants enter at South Third Street and Morris Avenue South. Anyone is welcome to enter the show.
