Renton Police have increased their patrols on the Cedar River Trail, after hearing rumors that a suspect has been assaulting trail users.

The only reported assault case was Dec. 20, and it was reported two weeks after the incident, said Police Chief Kevin Milosevich.

After the reporting party couldn’t identify anyone in a photo montage, he or she decided not to press charges.

The extra patrols were scheduled out of community concern.

“During the past couple weeks there have been rumors, Internet postings and general misinformation circulating regarding crime on the City of Renton’s trail system,” according to the release. “The actual events that have been reported to police regarding incidents on the trail do not resemble the information being spread via social networks.”

There is a person of interest in the assault case, who was arrested for unrelated reasons.

Police have been told that there are other incidents, but the department hasn’t received anymore calls.

Citizens are encouraged to call 911 whenever they see a suspicious situation.

“We’re asking that if people are witnessing this call us and give us a report,” Milosevich said.
