Man shot by Renton police charged with assaulting bus driver

The man who Renton police shot last week was wanted on a Department of Corrections escapee warrant and for allegedly assaulting a bus driver in Kirkland.

Alen Bolic, 24, was charged with third-degree assault and obstructing police, when he allegedly threatened a Kirkland officer with a gun during his flight.

DOC spokesperson Rowlanda Cawthon said Bolic was under community supervision for third-degree assault, when he failed to attend a meeting with his community corrections officer May 7.

A warrant was issued a week later.

It’s unclear where Bolic went. He reappeared in Kirkland Sept. 11, after allegedly assaulting a bus driver who had refused to accept a transfer ticket, according to charging papers.

After the assault, police confronted Bolic as he walked through the Park Place Center toward a Peter Kirk Park.

Prosecutors allege Bolic turned toward police with a gun at his side and said, “Walk away. Just walk away.”

Bolic was last seen in Kirkland entering a hotel a few blocks away.

Police identified Bolic from fingerprints found on a hard lemonade bottle. Witnesses said he carried the bottle onto the bus, before the incident with the driver.

A tip came in that Bolic was staying at his parent’s home in Kennydale, and Renton sent its Special Investigations Unit to the home Sept. 29.

Bolic was in the yard when he saw the officers approaching. He squirted a hose at them and turned to flee.

A Renton officer fired three rounds at Bolic, causing non-life-threatening injuries.

Police found an Airsoft gun designed to appear like a semi-automatic handgun and a knife on Bolic, according to charging papers.

The 41-year-old officer who shot Bolic is a seven-year veteran of Renton police. Sgt. Pat Lowery of the Kent Police Department expects the investigation to be complete in a couple weeks.

Bolic has multiple convictions for assault and property crimes.

He was booked into King County Jail nine times with nine warrants since 2005, according to charging papers.

Bolic also had an officer safety alert, which alleged he had threatened an officer with a 12-inch nail.

His arraignment is set for Oct. 11 in King County Superior Court.
