Luther’s Table downtown ready to offer dinner menu – and finally beer, wine

Luther’s Table, the new cafe and pub in downtown Renton, is celebrating its grand opening Saturday.

The establishment had a soft opening a few weeks ago but is now open serving coffee, lunch, dinner and local beer and wine. The state approved its liquor license March 29 to sell beer and wine, which was the only thing holding up its grand opening.

The celebration will include live music, an expanded menu with beer and wine, kids’ crafts and giveaways. To celebrate, staff is also asking customers to bring an item in support of the veterans the Compass Center housing above Luther’s Table.

Suggested helpful items include towels, full and queen size sheets, cleaning supplies, mops and brooms, household items, kitchen and bathroom wares and throw rugs.

The pub is named after Martin Luther, the famous theologian who invited “students to his home after school to discuss theology and share a pint of his wife Katy’s home-brewed ale,” according to a press release.

Luther’s Table will continue the tradition of fostering faith and developing theological depth through conversation and fellowship in downtown Renton.

“We’ve basically taken the same concept that Luther built and replicated it with a place that fits today’s times,” said Gretchen Mertes, mission deveoper at the restaurant. “Luther’s Table is today’s way of making church a social center again, like it was 50 years ago, with a modern twist –really great music, an open mic, poetry slams and a place to meet a friend and have a beer.”

It is bringing the church outside its walls and into a setting that may be more comfortable for many people, she said.

Some staff are trained and serve as volunteers, such as the baristas, the bartenders and the custodian.

Luther’s Table continues the legacy of Renton Lutheran Church, which closed in 2006. The vision to move it forward was continued by St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Renton.
