Is someone asking you to donate to your fire department?

Beware, it’s possibly a scam.

Periodically, local fire departments hear about door-to-door or phone solicitations for fire safety services from residents who are suspicious of them.

Solicitors often claim to be affiliated with or endorsed by the fire department or that a portion of your donation will support local firefighters.

According to a recent Renton Regional Fire Authority media release, local fire departments never go door-to-door selling products or services nor do they call asking for a donation.

“If our fire department personnel come to your front door, we will always be in uniform, be driving a fire department vehicle, and carry department identification,” reads the release. “The decision to use a door-to-door service or to donate to a phone solicitor is up to our residents, but we strongly encourage you to research these companies carefully and also use care when letting strangers into your home.:

If you are suspicious of a solicitor, shut your door or hang up the phone. If the solicitor is there in person and will not leave, call 911.
