On Monday evening, April 15, crews will restripe lanes on Rainier Avenue South to direct traffic to the west side of the roadway between Southwest Grady Way and South Seventh St (weather permitting).
This is the first segment of a two-phased lane shift that will provide space for construction activities on the east side of Rainier Avenue South. Drivers should expect delays and increased congestion while traffic patterns adjust, and should exercise caution when entering or exiting driveways along the corridor.
Construction on the east side of Rainier will look similar to west side construction. Access to businesses will be maintained throughout the work activities, which will include removing asphalt, driveways and sidewalks; installing new water and stormwater infrastructure; installing new street lights, sidewalks, driveways and landscaped areas; and paving.
At times, additional lane restrictions may be required but will be timed to avoid peak commute hours. Limited turn restrictions may be required at intersections.
Work on the east side of Rainier Avenue S is expected to be complete in late summer 2013. Overall construction, including final paving of the roadway and landscape restoration, is expected to be complete by spring 2014.
