Charges filed in accident that left motorcyclist critically injured

A 39-year-old man remains in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle following an early morning collision Monday involving the motorcycle he was riding and a Ford pickup truck, according to Renton police.

The driver of the pickup, William Michael Fielder, 33, of Renton, has been charged with reckless driving in the accident that has left Tucker Sproat with massive internal injuries.

Fielder’s arraignment is set for Sept. 17.

According to charging papers, Fielder was driving under the influence of drugs or intoxicating liquor. The accident occurred on Fielder’s birthday. According to prosecutors, Fielder and a group of friends had been at the Cascade bowling alley and at Bender’s bar, apparently celebrating.

According to prosecutors, Fielder was doing “donuts” in the road and speeding past traffic in a no-passing area using oncoming lanes.

Fielder was booked into the Renton Municipal Jail and later transferred to the Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent, where he has made two court appearances.

It’s the second serious motorcycle accident in the Renton area in the last two months.

No one has stepped forward in the collision on June 26 that killed a Renton man riding home from work on his motorcycle.

That victim, Daren Dougan, 40, was left critically injured on the pavement at South 45th Place South and Talbot Road South. The driver of the other vehicle, a white SUV, fled the scene.

Dougan was riding home from his job at Mor Furniture for Less in Kent when the accident occurred, at about 11 p.m.

Renton Police Sgt. Clark Wilcox said paint from the SUV that was transferred to the motorcycle in the collision has been sent to the Washington state Crime Lab for analysis.

In Monday’s incident, Renton Police officers and Renton Fire and Emergency Service crews were dispatched to Benson Road South at South 26th Street at about 2:10 a.m.

According to charging papers, the Ford pickup was driving north on Benson Road South and made an illegal left turn at the intersection of South 26th Street, in front of Sproat’s Harley Davidson motorcycle, which was traveling south on Benson Road South.

The motorcycle collided with the truck as it turned, according to police. Renton Fire and Emergency Service crews treated Sproat at the scene.

According to prosecutors, Sproat’s prognosis was undetermined when they filed charges.

If Sproat dies, prosecutors likely will amend the charges.
