Cedar River dog park closed due to potential parovirus outbreak

Starting Aug. 11, the dog park closed for at least two weeks to allow for treatment.

The city of Renton temporarily closed the Cedar River dog park at 1500 Houser Way S, due to the recent outbreak of canine parvovirus in King County.

The dog park will be closed on Aug. 11 for at least two weeks while all surfaces are treated with a diluted bleach mixture, according to a city press release.

A local veterinarian informed the Community Services department that a dog was found to have the canine parvovirus and most likely visited the Cedar River dog park recently.

Parvovirus spreads easily, is very hearty and can live in untreated areas for long periods of time.

The virus can shed for up to two weeks prior to the dog showing any signs of illness and can contaminate the ground, feeding dishes, collars, leashes and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and lethargy.
