City of Renton crews will reopen Shattuck Avenue South on Friday.

The new Shattuck Avenue South incorporates several major improvements, including a second lane under the Shattuck Avenue Bridge, a new sidewalk under the east span of the bridge, major drainage and stormwater improvements that reduce flooding, and a “sacrificial beam” to protect the bridge from damage.

The project also includes a new and updated traffic signal system.

In 2008, the BNSF Railway Co., in cooperation with the City of Renton, completed the replacement of the railroad bridge over Shattuck Avenue South, along with three other railroad bridges in Renton.

The Shattuck Avenue improvements are part of Renton’s Rainier Avenue South Improvements Project that will add Business Access and Transit (BAT) lanes to Rainier Avenue South, left-turn lanes at intersections, widen sidewalks with street landscaping, and add pedestrian-scale lighting and landscaped median barriers.

The total cost of the Shattuck Avenue project was $2 million and it was completely funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
