The Renton Salvation Army is experiencing a bit of bah-humbug this season when it comes to its donation programs.
Even with new ways for people to give online, with IPhone apps and texting, in addition to their kettle campaign, the organization is receiving fewer donations than anticipated.
“We’re kind of limping along,” said Captain Terry Masango of the Salvation Army Renton Corps.
As of Thursday, the organization was at par with donations from last year, but last year it had just a third of the sites available this year, Masango said.
Masango suspects community donations are down, because of the economy. Even the toy drive would have suffered if it weren’t for last-minute donations from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast.
Now, the Salvation Army has enough toys. It is set to distribute them, as well as food, Tuesday as part of its “Toy N Joy” and “Adopt-a-Family” programs. It has more than 950 people registered for the giveaway, but expects up to 1,000.
Masango said they’ve tried to make it more convenient for people to donate funds, but fewer seem to be taking advantage of those outlets.
With the new “Text to Give” program, those who want to give can text “Give” to 85944 to make a $10 donation to the Salvation Army.
But, Masango said they haven’t seen an increase in giving through that method.
