Fido’s dental care isn’t only about ‘doggie breath’

Renton veterinarian highlights the importance of pet dental care for their health

Dental care isn’t only important for people. In fact, more than 80 per cent of dogs over the age of three having active dental disease.

Bad breath, behavioral changes or refusing to eat can all be signs of serious dental problems,” notes Dr. Tracy Wood, from Animal Health Care Center of Renton.

A veterinarian with more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Wood explains that dental disease doesn’t just affect a pet’s mouth. It can have significant impacts on their overall health, including their heart.

“Infections from rotten teeth can spread, leading to heart disease and other complications,” she says.

As National Pet Dental Health Month approaches in February, pet owners are encouraged to prioritize dental care year-round.

Adopting a preventive approach, Dr. Wood’s clinic uses advanced digital dental X-rays to detect issues beneath the gum line – problems that a routine visual inspection might miss.

“Animals can’t tell you where it hurts,” she explains. “This technology allows us to uncover and treat issues that could otherwise go unnoticed.”

Smaller dog breeds are particularly prone to dental issues due to their weaker teeth and chewing habits. “Since they’re so prone to severe dental disease, adding routine care is especially critical for these pets.”

Through regular dental exams, tooth brushing, dental chews and water additives like Oratene can help reduce plaque and prevent more serious problems.

“We’ve seen so many pets bounce back dramatically after dental care,” she says. “Older pets who’ve had rotten teeth removed often act like puppies again – they’re happier, healthier and more energetic.”

A family-owned approach

The Animal Health Care Center offers personalized care plans tailored to each pet and owner. Unlike some corporate vet clinics, her team ensures transparency with upfront costs and a welcoming environment designed to keep pets at ease.

Dr. Wood encourages owners to schedule dental check-ups now. “It’s better to address issues early than wait until they become bigger problems.”
