Don’t cut KCSARC’s services that help victims, kids | Letter to the editor

KCSARC (King County Sexual Assault Resource Center) is a critical element in public safety, and there has never been a greater need for these services. But the governor’s budget proposal of reduction in sexual assault funding will result in less help for victims and families. Sexual assault services are critical elements in public safety. Without legal advocacy services victims are less likely to participate in the criminal-justice system and offenders are less likely to face prosecution.

KCSARC helps more than 1,000 children, teen and adult victims navigate the criminal-justice system, provides trauma-focused therapy and supports a 24-hour resource line for victims and their families. In 2010, 1,735 children and teens received help from KCSARC because of sexual assault/abuse. This program cannot be cut back; it is essential for victims.

I am very concerned for the future of this program. Cut backs should not be made at the expense of children.
