Three Renton business owners are trying to capitalize on the potential of The Landing with their latest venture: Fresh Way Pizza.
John Finlay and Heather and Wayne Preston are banking on lunchtime Boeing traffic and cinema-goers to become customers of their pizza restaurant with a green bent.
Call it a step beyond such establishments like Papa Murphy’s. Fresh Way Pizza features take and bake as well as dine-in options. Their menu has everything from pizza by the slice to wings, ribs, potato skins, signature salads and cookie dough. And as their name implies they use fresh and, when they can, organic ingredients. They make their whole wheat crust in-house and they have a gluten-free option.
But, what sets them a part most is their leaning toward sustainable practices. They use compost-able pizza boxes, reusable plates for dine-in customers and two Smart cars for deliveries. They also try and use gas power instead of electricity as much as possible.
Their point is to keep their carbon footprint as small as possible “trying to embrace that green movement a little bit while still obviously remaining profitable,” said Finlay.
This is his first foray into the restaurant business. He had a printing company in California years ago. Finlay wanted to get in on an expansion more than start from the ground up, so he teamed up with the Prestons.
This isn’t the Prestons’ first restaurant. Heather Preston once owned a fine-dining restaurant in Toronto, Canada. The Prestons are Canadiens and came to the U.S. because of Wayne’s work.
They use to own the Fresh Way Pizza in Redmond, but they closed it in April, saying it struggled in that location. The Prestons were in that location for about two years.
“It’s just a concept that we’ve been developing over the past six years,” said Heather Preston. “We just loved the idea of the Papa Murphy’s and taking it a step further and doing what they don’t do as well with the delivering and dining in.”
Now they’re hoping for a fresh start at The Landing. Their grand opening was April 1 and since then business has been good.
“I’m happy with the amount of business that comes through the dining room, which is a testament to the location here in The Landing,” said Finlay.
“The Landing is just a phenomenal area,” said Heather Preston. “It still needs to be discovered by so many people, but I didn’t even know it was here.”
The Landing is 80 percent leased and it opened in 2007.
Fresh Way Pizza is a kid-friendly place where adults can still kick back and relax with a glass of beer or wine.
The owners hope to stay involved wit the community. Fresh Way Pizza was a title sponsor of the Seahawks 12k Run and they will sponsor the Family Film Festival at The Landing this summer.
They currently have 11 employees and hope to hire a few more as their delivery routes expand.
Fresh Way Pizza is located at 804 North Landing Way, Suite A. Their hours are Monday through Wednesday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
