    Mayor Denis Law
Renton relaxes under leadership of new mayor
    By Dean Radford • June 26, 2008 7:02 pm

Denis Law is certainly not a reluctant mayor.
But he gave deep thought to whether he would leave behind his decades-long career as a successful newspaper publisher to run for mayor of this city of about 80,000 people.
He found that tensions among various stakeholders in the city and on the City Council were preventing the important business of the city from getting done. A change in leadership was needed at the top, he reasoned.
The citizens of Renton agreed and the results are apparent, six months into Law’s first term as mayor.

    By Dean Radford • June 24, 2008 3:08 pm

About 1,000 graduating seniors from Renton and surrounding high schools got a late-night helicopter ride over Renton, part of their graduation-night celebration.
The idea was to keep them busy – and safe – on what can become a dangerous night of unsupervised partying.
“We look at potentially keeping 1,000 DUIs from happening,” said Michael O’Leary, owner of AirO Inc., which offered the four-minute flights through the grad-night packages typically organized by parents of the seniors.
But the noise from those dozens of helicopter flights over six nights has generated enough complaints from those trying to sleep that O’Leary will meet with Mayor Denis Law about the future of the flights.

    Renton bank marks 85th anniversary
    By Dean Radford • June 20, 2008 2:34 am

For 85 years, First Savings Bank of Renton has stayed close to its roots – the people of Renton who need a loan to buy a home.
That is the traditional role of the “thrifts,” the savings and loans where people pool their money in their savings accounts and then it’s loaned out to others.

Hundreds of Renton teens are waking up this morning after one of the most exciting days and nights of their lives – high school graduation.
OK, maybe some of them will wake up this afternoon. But the sentiment is the same, following Friday’s day of commencements.
For them, it’s the end of 12 years (and maybe 13, if they went to kindergarten) of education that will lead to a college career or directly to work.

    By Dean Radford • June 12, 2008 7:23 pm

There are no city elections on this year’s primary and general election ballots, but state and national races should provide plenty of fireworks.
The candidates for state Legislature, governor and other state officials and Congress formally made known their intention to run during the recent filing period for the Aug. 19 primary.
Of course, it’s a presidential year, too.
This is also the year that the top-two vote-getters in the primary move on to the general election in November. That could mean two Democrats or two Republicans move on in a partisan race.

It’s really sad to think that Alvina Popke or anyone who reads her story will harden their hearts to those in need. If that happens, then that is what the con artist has really stolen from us – a giving heart.
    But the message is clear.
If someone walks up to you on the street, out of the blue, with a scheme to help you or a charity, keep on walking. Instead, walk down to the Salvation Army and write them a check. Or mail off a check to your favorite charity.

A key piece of evidence in solving the mystery of who is buried in a grave in the Highlands is about the size of a man’s wedding band.
It’s a collar button, of a style dating from the early 1900s. A crew of five investigators painstakingly sifting through a narrow trench next to a new home’s foundation found the button, along with pieces of wool and leather, last Friday.
