    Renton’s Jalen Markey scored a goal for the U18 U.S. Men’s National team against Ventura County Fusion March 31.

    Markey, 17, attends O’Dea High School and plays for the Sounders FC Academy U16 team. The defender was named to the U.S. team’s 35-man roster and spent a week at the team’s national camp in Carson, Calif.

    After finishing just short of its first state appearance since 2002, the Lindbergh softball team is back and looking for more this spring.

    The Eagles are off to a 5-2 start (4-2 in league play) and in third place in the Seamount, first among 2A teams. The team hopes to repeat last season’s first-round bye in the district tournament, but change what happened after that – an 0-2 record.

    The Hazen baseball team topped Renton 11-0 in five innings Friday.

    The Highlanders (5-3 overall, 3-2 Seamount) scored 10 runs in the first inning. Renton (2-5, 2-4) couldn’t manage a hit against Hazen pitcher Zac Kolterman. Kolterman pitched all five innings, walked two batters and struck out eight. He also had two RBI in the game.

    The Lindbergh baseball team stayed on top of the Seamount with 25-2 win against Tyee Monday.

    The Eagles (3-0 overall, 3-0 Seamount) couldn’t be slowed on offense, scoring at least five runs in every inning.

    The Lindbergh softball team topped Tyee 8-2 Monday.

    The Eagles (3-1 overall, 3-1 Seamount) led 3-0 after the first two innings, then added five runs in the sixth. The Totems scored their only two runs in the seventh.

    The results haven’t been showing on the scoreboards, but Liberty soccer coach Darren Tremblay is excited about his team’s early progress.

    Just one example of the team’s conflicting results came March 23 in a 1-0 loss to Bellevue. Tremblay said Bellevue took just two shots in a game mostly controlled by Liberty.

    The Hazen Drill Team captured state titles in 3A Military and 3A Pom at the Dance/Drill State Championships March 24. The team also placed fourth in 2A/3A Kick.

    “Winning state was pretty amazing,” said Hazen coach Kristin Sargent. “It was not expected, which made the win so much sweeter for the team.”

    In a battle of man versus machine, Lindbergh basketball standout Jimmy Keum will take on Air Ball, the Lindbergh robotics team’s robot.

    The contest is set for April 6 at 1:30 p.m. at an assembly at Lindbergh. Keum and Air Ball will battle in a series of basketball challenges, including Keum shooting with his eyes closed and Air Ball shooting without any human control.

    The Hazen baseball team topped Liberty 6-2 in a non-league game Tuesday.

    The Highlanders (1-0) scored twice in the first inning with an RBI single by Zac Kolterman and a sacrifice fly from Cody Moorhead. Hazen scored again in the second when Sam Cook came in on a Kyle Arinobu single.

    “The Issaquah coaches used to say that playing us was like stepping in a hornet’s nest,” said Liberty coach Brian Hartman. “It’s the biggest compliment I’ve ever had from another coach.”

    After a whirlwind start to the season, the Lindbergh boys soccer team is simply looking for some steadiness as games get under way.

    New coach Ryan Johnson started off Feb. 27, the first day of spring practice, as an assistant coach with Hazen. He interviewed for the job at Lindbergh midday, and then within an hour he was the head coach for the Eagles.

    On the bus ride after a season-ending loss to Auburn Mountainview, coach Ken Matthews spelled things out for the team.

    “I laid down the law at that point,” said Matthews, who took over as head coach of the team mid-season. “They all know I have very high expectations.”

    Liberty senior Aspen Winegar made the KingCo 3A/2A all-league first team.

    The Patriots went 16-9, making the district tournament and playing in the KingCo championship game. Winegar led the team in scoring with 12.5 points. She also led the team in rebounding (7.0 per game) and blocks (1.4). She added 1.3 steals and 2.2 assists per game.

    There’s little doubt Lindbergh senior Jimmy Keum knows how to step up when it counts. Keum led the Eagles to fifth place at the 2A state basketball tournament and the team’s first ever state tournament win.

    Keum scored 33 points in Lindbergh’s (16-14) early win against Clover Park. He scored a combined 21 points in the Eagles final two state games as teams started to adjust their defenses around him.

    Boeing engineer helps inspire next generation

    Tom Bradley was an engineer from the start and now, along with Boeing, he’s doing his best to get the word out about the profession to local youth.

    “I was probably a born engineer and didn’t know it,” Bradley said. “I had every Erector set there was, I did all the science fairs growing up, but I didn’t know it was called engineering until I went to college.”
