State wrestling: Lindbergh’s Isiah Corwin, Mark Garcia and Luke Garcia impress at state

Lindbergh’s Isiah Corwin, Mark Garcia and Luke Garcia were out to prove one thing to the wrestling community: You are wrong about the Seamount.

“People are always saying wrestlers from the Seamount can’t make it at state,” Luke said. “Me, Isiah and Mark are out to prove them wrong.”

Last weekend, the Eagles wrestlers went a long way to doing just that. Lindbergh placed 21st as a team at the 3A state wrestling championships, scoring 28.5 points.

Corwin placed fifth at 152 pounds. The sophomore topped Bellevue’s Erik Ovens 14-11 in the first round. In the second round, he was leading East Valley’s Jacob Rodriguez in points before a knock on the head changed the flow of the match.

“I blanked out for a second,” Corwin said. “He got my back and pinned me.”

He picked up a 13-2 victory against Timberline’s Andre Courie in the consolation bracket, before falling again to Bonney Lake’s Joey Salgado to end his state run.

Corwin was an alternate at state last year and was set on making the tournament this season. He went undefeated in league action this year.

Mark placed sixth at 103 pounds. The freshman fell to Sunnyside’s Christian Reyes (the eventual state champion) in his first match. But he wasn’t close to finished, he stormed through the consolation bracket. He pinned Prarie’s Joel Wiley, technically pinned North Thurston’s Austin Ottenbacher and pinned Camas’ Ryan Markhamd, before losing 15-8 to Yelm’s Josh Inouya-Clayton.

Mark’s twin brother, Luke, placed eighth at 112 pounds. The freshman lost in the first round to Camas’ Jimmy Miller. He picked up wins over Mount Si’s Cody Botten and Auburn Moutainview’s Matt Anderson in the consolation bracket. He lost to North Central’s Nathan Brown to end his state run.

“They went all out,” said Lindbergh coach Joe Papich. “They have all gone beyond exceeding my expectations. They’ve worked really hard to be here.”
