Renton School District teachers will protest and rally today to bring attention to their frustrations.

A sign-waving protest is planned for 3 p.m., May 28 at the intersections of Rainier Avenue and Grady Way as well as Rainier Avenue and Airport Way. A rally is to follow at 5:15 p.m. at the Renton Piazza, located on the north side of Third Avenue, between Burnett Avenue and Logan Avenue, in Renton.

Along with Renton teachers, Renton School Board members, Sheryl Moore, acting superintendent; Washington Education Association Vice President Stephen Miller, Renton administrators and Mayor Denis Law are all expected to be at the rally.

“Many REA members wanted to walk out, just like their colleagues in districts across the state, but it was decided by Renton teachers that we would be courageous in a different way,” said Renton Education Association President Cami Kiel.

They will be protesting the “lack of ample funding to public schools as required in the McCleary decision, possible healthcare reforms, threats to teacher-evaluation, failure to even acknowledge the passage of I-1351 (class size reduction measure) by the voters and a general lack of progress on the budget,” she said.

The community is invited to attend the rally.
