New taproom caters to craft beer fans

But the owner of Brewmaster Taproom started to get in good with her in-laws

If you’ve been disappointed with the lack of craft beer movement in Renton, this is your season to rejoice. There’s a new taproom that’s opening up on Benson Hill.

The Brewmaster Taproom is set to open during late July, and is owned by the same brains behind the Brewmaster Bakery, the beer-themed bakery also located in Renton. The new taproom won’t feature any beers made on-site, but will feature a wide selection of other local craft brews.

It’s safe to say that owner Marley Rall is obsessed with everything beer, but that wasn’t always the case. Rall admits that it all started with “the vanity of wanting my future-in-laws to like me!”

When Rall was dating her now-husband, she was eager to please his family. One Christmas, she noticed that after her now-brother-in-law brewed some beer, he poured the spent grain a byproduct of the brewing process down the sink. When she asked about it, she learned that she could make dog treats with it.

“And I thought, ‘This is my in. This is how I’ll try to get this guy and his family to like me,’” said Rall. “That was the first thing I made with spent grain. I think they came out pretty good for a first try. The dogs were willing to eat it.”

Rall expanded her spent grain recipe book, and soon, she was giving out homemade spent grain granola as favors at her wedding. Not only was the granola well-received, but it also brewed her inspiration.

“That was the moment I realized this might be something I could do at some point in my life,” Rall said.

After saving up for a while, she finally opened her beer-themed bakery which includes an elaborate spread of spent grain granola and breads, beer-infused cookies, caramels and more.

Having married into a family of craft beer enthusiasts, and noticing the lack of craft beer culture in Renton, Rall wanted to open up a space she knew the city needed.

However, Rall finds herself in the business of giving back rather than making bank.

“Before I started this I was in the nonprofit field. I did fundraising and I specialized in annual campaigns and events,” she said. “That’s what I bring to the business understanding giving back and understanding that it’s not about how much money you can make, it’s how much money you can make to be happy and everything else is about taking care of other people.”

Rall is insistent on not only taking care of her customers, but also her employees.

“All of our employees get paid above minimum wage because I want them to be happy and I want them to feel comfortable and enjoy what they do,” she said. “It’s a very big thing for me. I love my employees.”

She’s also particular about leaving room for her featured breweries to shine in their craft.

“I wanted to give [breweries] a place to show off their beer but also give them an opportunity to show off their beer they might not be known for,” she said. “A lot of times breweries can be pigeon-toed for what they are known for.

The taproom will feature 20 taps of local craft beer including brews from Ghostfish Brewing, Airways Brewing, Postdoc Brewing and Hi-Fi Brewing. They will also carry fresh root beer on tap for kids (indeed, this taproom is kid-friendly). Rall is also bringing in her beer-infused baked goods to the store, including her famous spent grain dog grain (that’s right, it’s dog-friendly too).

“I want it to be a place where people can relax and be happy and comfortable and know that they’re going to be well taken -care of,” said Rall. “And if they have any issues, they will be heard. Service, more than anything, is important to me.”

The Brewmaster Taproom is located 2000 Benson Rd. S. and is set to open later this month.
