Group favoring library at the Piazza plans kickoff event Thursday

A group of about 10 people have organized to officially support the downtown Renton library’s proposed move to the Piazza.

Called “People for the Piazza Park Library,” the group is hosting a kickoff and fundraising event 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, June 28, at The Red House Beer and Wine Shoppe, 410 Burnett Ave. S., in downtown Renton.

“It’s going to be a wonderful facility,” said King Parker of the proposed library at the Piazza site.

Parker is co-chair of the group with Laurie Beeden.

“I think it’s the only place that Renton citizens can get the maximum bang for the buck,” said Parker. “Trite, but true,” he added.

Parker has been working on the issue of the libraries in Renton for the last four years and called it “unimaginable” to change course now.

On Aug. 7 Renton residents will get to vote whether to move the downtown library from its current location over the Cedar River to the Piazza.

The citizens group seeks to raise funds, “as much as we can collect,” according to Parker, in support of the Piazza move.

Parker hopes that more interested people will turn out at Thursday’s kickoff.

“We’re talking about a beautiful functional facility,” said Parker of recent renderings done of the project.
